"DO CHRISTIANS KEEP THE 10 COMMANDMENTS?"

Thesis: To instill in the hearer the all encompassing authority of Christ through His gospel as opposed to that which is seen in the Law of Moses, and to give them a better understanding of how the two fit together in God’s eternal purpose.

Text: Gal 3:23-29
Gal 3:23 But before (the; YLT) faith came, we were kept in ward under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Gal 3:24 So that the law is become our tutor to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Gal 3:25 But now that (the; YLT) faith is come, we are no longer under a tutor. Gal 3:26 For ye are all sons of God, through (the; YLT) faith, in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ did put on Christ. Gal 3:28 There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male and female; for ye all are one man in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:29 And if ye are Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, heirs according to promise.

Jesus was born, lived, and died under the Law of Moses. (Gal 4:4)

Gal 4:4 but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

And everything he taught was binding, (Mt. 28:20 Acts 3:22-23),

Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age.

Act 3:22 Moses indeed said, A prophet shall the Lord God raise up unto you from among your brethren, like unto me. To him shall ye hearken in all things whatsoever he shall speak unto you. Act 3:23 And it shall be, that every soul that shall not hearken to that prophet, shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.

But it did not go into effect until after he died. (Heb 9:16-17)

Heb 9:16 For where a testament is, there must of necessity be the death of him that made it. Heb 9:17 For a testament is of force where there hath been death: for it doth never avail while he that made it liveth.

He came to fulfill the law. (Mt 5:17)

Mat 5:17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.

“Fulfil” defined: (make replete, satisfy, complete, end, expire; Strong’s)

Salvation through Christ is where the law was to lead those of the nation Israel, it was at the end of that figurative road known as the Law of Moses Yet it’s not destroyed; those who lived under it will be judged by it. (Rev 20:12) It is merely set aside until the Day of Judgment.

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened (the OT and the NT): and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.

It has been abolished (set aside as being authoritative, not destroyed; Eph 2:15),

Eph 2:15 having abolished in the flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; that he might create in himself of the two one new man, so making peace;

Nailed to the cross of Christ, it officially went into effect at the death of Christ death (Col 2:14)

Col 2:14 having blotted out the bond written in ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us: and he hath taken it out that way, nailing it to the cross;

Individuals are baptized into His death (Rom 6:3), where His sin cleansing blood was shed (John 19:33-34), and thereby accessing that salvation through said blood.

Rom 6:3 Or are ye ignorant that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

Joh 19:33 but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: Joh 19:34 howbeit one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and straightway there came out blood and water.

Christians are dead to it. (Rom 7:4)

Rom 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.

Not just the 613 ordinances, but also the 10 commandments (Rom 7:7).

Rom 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

“Thou shalt not covet” (Ex 20:17, the 10th commandment) proves this to be the case.

Exo 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

In fact, one who attempts to be justified by the Law of Moses has fallen from grace, is severed from Christ. (Gal 5:4).

Gal 5:4 Ye are severed from Christ, ye who would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away from grace.

“Do we keep the law of Moses?” was the topic of Acts ch 15 (turn to Acts 15:1-5)

Act 15:1 And certain men came down from Judaea and taught the brethren, saying, Except ye be circumcised after the custom of Moses, ye cannot be saved. Act 15:2 And when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and questioning with them, the brethren appointed that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. Act 15:3 They therefore, being brought on their way by the church, passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. Act 15:4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church and the apostles and the elders, and they rehearsed all things that God had done with them. Act 15:5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, It is needful to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses.

They said they gave no such commandment. (Acts 15:24)

Act 15:24 Forasmuch as we have heard that certain who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls; to whom we gave no commandment;

Acts 15:28-29 gives us the result of this inspired meeting

Act 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: Act 15:29 that ye abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication; from which if ye keep yourselves, it shall be well with you. Fare ye well.

These inspired men, through the power of the Holy Spirit brought forth God’s law concerning this matter of keeping the Law of Moses, the four things mentioned here are those which transcends all of God’s Law’s throughout time.

Christians keep commands similar to 9 of the 10 commandments, and similar to that which we can see in Patriarchy, remember God’s laws throughout time (Patriarchy, Law of Moses, Law of Christ) are similar, but not the same, Christ has “all authority” (Mt 28:18), that leaves no authority left over for Patriarchy, Moses or the prophets, and that is exactly what God meant when Christ, Moses and Elijah appeared on the Mount of Transfiguration before Peter, James, and John (turn to Mt 17:1-8)

Mat 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: Mat 17:2 and he was transfigured before them; and his face did shine as the sun, and his garments became white as the light. Mat 17:3 And behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elijah talking with him. Mat 17:4 And Peter answered, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, I will make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah. Mat 17:5 While he was yet speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. Mat 17:6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. Mat 17:7 And Jesus came and touched them and said, Arise, and be not afraid. Mat 17:8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, save Jesus only.

The message given here is to obey Jesus only, i.e. don’t make tabernacles for Moses and Elijah, “hear ye Him” that is Christ; “Jesus only” has all authority (Mt 28:18; Col 3:17).

Here are the commands from the NT that are somewhat equivalent to the 10 commandments (turn to Ex 20:3-17). . .

1st
Exo 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Mt 6:24; 6:33; ---

Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon (riches).

Mat 6:33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Under the Law of Christ one will put God before any and all things, including the gods of self, riches, pleasure and so forth.

2nd
Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them, for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me,

Col 3:5---

Col 3:5 Put to death therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry;

The Christian through the renewal of the Gospel would put to death those inward traits contrary to his growth in the faith, by feeding and applying that pure milk of the Word (1 Pet 2:2) which would enable one to be perfectly fitted for heaven (John 14:6).

3rd
Exo 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Mt 6:9---

Mat 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

God’s name was held in extreme reverence under Moses, the same would be under Christ, the Christian will not be saying “oh God” as if it were nothing more than a blink of the eye, as the rest of the unbelieving world these days, they would not be conformed to this world, but rather transformed by the power of the Gospel (Rom 12:2), this is outwardly noticeable in the faithful followers of Christ.

4th
Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Heb 4:9-11, Rev 14:13---

(Heaven is our Sabbath rest, we don’t keep this, we hope for it)

Heb 4:9 There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God. Heb 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest hath himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. Heb 4:11 Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience.

Rev 14:13 And I heard the voice from heaven saying, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; for their works follow with them.

5th
Exo 20:12 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.

Eph 6:1-3---

Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Eph 6:2 Honor thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with promise), Eph 6:3 that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

The Christian that cares for one’s elderly parents shows forth to his own children the kind of love that is manifested through the Gospel, those, in turn are likely to be taken care of in their old age by their children, nursing homes will only be used as a necessary element of the elderly’s life, not the norm, families would live for each other with each other, not for self

6th
Exo 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.

Rev 21:8---

Rev 21:8 But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, AND MURDERERS, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.

The New Covenant clearly teaches that capital punishment is approved of God (Rom 13:1-7), it also teaches the end result of unforgiven murderers, Moses Law ended with stoning, dying in one’s sins, Christ’s Law shows in great detail the eternal consequence of such sins.

7th
Exo 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Heb 13:4; Mt 5:28; 1 Cor 6:9---

Heb 13:4 Let marriage be had in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Mat 5:28 but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

1Co 6:9 Or know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, NOR ADULTERERS, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with men, 1Co 6:10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Under Christ’s Law adultery is not tolerated in the least, in fact Christ attacks the root of this problem, one’s very heart, mind and thoughts are to be in obedience, in subjection, willingly from such fantasies, every thought is to be held captive to Christ our King (2 Cor 10:3-5), we are told what to think upon (Phili 4:8), and what to not.

8th
Exo 20:15 Thou shalt not steal.

Eph 4:28---

Eph 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have whereof to give to him that hath need.

The Perfect Law of Liberty not only does not condone theft, it puts the former thief to work (2 Thess 3:10) in order that the good works, which they fervently now want to do (Tit 2:14), may be accomplished as one’s lot in Christ (Eph 2:10), thereby bringing glory to the Father (Mt 5:15-16).

9th
Exo 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Mt 15:19-20 ; Rev 21:8---

Mat 15:19 For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, FALSE WITNESS, railings: Mat 15:20 these are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not the man.

Rev 21:8 But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, AND ALL LIARS, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.

Lying of any sort was not approved of God throughout any of His Laws (even though we see many partaking of such in the OT), now we are shown the end of such words without forgiveness, by ones’ words a person is justified (Rom 10:9), and by one’s words they are likewise condemned (Mt 12:37).

10th
Exo 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

Luke 12:15---

Luk 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Desiring “things” that are perishing are put in their proper perspective in Christ, possessions are to be used for the glory of God and the good of others, the most important possession one can have is fellowship with God. In the eternal city, New Jerusalem, gold is to be trodden under foot, it is used for pavement, and serving and praising God for ever and ever are the true riches that God’s people will desire (Rev 22:3-5).

And what about the greatest commandment in the Law (Mt 22:36-38), what is the Christian’s equivalent for that?

Mat 22:36 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? Mat 22:37 And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Mat 22:38 This is the great and first commandment.

The Greatest commandment under Christ (1 John 4:9-10; 19 ) . . .

1Jo 4:9 Herein was the love of God manifested in us, that God hath sent his only begotten Son into the world that we might live through him. 1Jo 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

1Jo 4:19 We love, because he first loved us.

Mat 22:39 And a second like unto it is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

And our second like unto it, not to love as our self, but above ourselves (1 Cor 10:24) . . .

1Co 10:24 Let no man seek his own, but each his neighbor’s good.

We are to love to the degree that Christ loved (John 13:34-35; 15:12-13)

Joh 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. Joh 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Joh 15:12 This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have loved you. Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Mat 22:40 On these two commandments the whole law hangeth, and the prophets.

These are the base upon which the gospel hangeth (1 Tim 1:5) . . .

1Ti 1:5 But the end of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned:

SO WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW OF MOSES?

1. To teach man the knowledge and severity of sin. Rom 3:20; 7:7

Rom 3:20 because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law cometh the knowledge of sin.

Rom 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

2. To be a tutor through types and shadows to bring the children of Israel to, prepare them for, Christ. Gal 3:24

Gal 3:24 So that the law is become our tutor to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

3. To protect the seed line of Christ (the physical nation of Israel), to keep them in check, so they didn’t sin themselves and Christ’s seed line out of existence because of the just nature of our God, Who is not only love, but also a consuming fire (Gal 3:19).

Gal 3:19 What then is the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise hath been made; and it was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW OF MOSES FOR CHRISTIANS TODAY?

1. We learn about our unchanging God (Mal 3:6; Ja 1:17), how He reacts to certain situations, what pleases Him, and what does not; and how He worked to bring about His plan of redemption throughout the ages, and that through it and it’s fulfilled prophecies, we can have comfort and hope in God’s Word (Rom 15:4).

Rom 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope.

2. (1 Cor 10:6,11) The things therein were written as examples for our admonition (warning) so that we don’t make the same mistakes as Israel of old.

1Co 10:6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

1Co 10:11 Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

3. Thus we can count on God to keep His word concerning our hope of eternal life (Tit 1:2).

Tit 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

SO WHERE DOES THE CHRISTIAN LOOK TODAY FOR THEIR SOURCE OF AUTHORITY?

Only through the rightly divided New Testament, remember Mt 17:8

Mat 17:8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, save Jesus only.

Remember what God said, don’t make tabernacles for Moses and Elijah, “hear ye Him” that is Christ, “Jesus only” has all authority.

1. Jesus Christ has all authority. (Mt 28:18)

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.

2. Moses has none. (Gal 5:4)

Gal 5:4 Ye are severed from Christ, ye who would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away from grace.

3. Men have none (Col 2:8; Pro 14:12)

Col 2:8 Take heed lest there shall be any one that maketh spoil of you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ:

Pro 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man; But the end thereof are the ways of death.

4. What ever we do, we do by the authority of Christ. (Col 3:17)

Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus (similar to phrase “in the name of the law”), giving thanks to God the Father through him.

5. His words are the Father’s commands. (Jn 12:49)

Joh 12:49 For I spake not from myself; but the Father that sent me, he hath given me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

6. He gave them to the Apostles. (Jn 17:8)

Joh 17:8 for the words which thou gavest me I have given unto them; and they received them, and knew of a truth that I came forth from thee, and they believed that thou didst send me.

7. Including Paul (Gal 1:12)

Gal 1:12 For neither did I receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came to me through revelation of Jesus Christ.

8. And other selected New Testament prophets (Luke, Mark, ect, Eph 3:5)

Eph 3:5 which in other generations was not made known unto the sons of men, as it hath now been revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;

9. When Jesus was on earth, the apostles weren’t able to bear all the truth, they still needed some more renewing of their minds (John 16:12)

Joh 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

10. The Comforter would reveal to them all the truth (Jn 16:13)

Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.

11. Through the Apostles and New Testament prophets of the 1st century. (Eph 3:3-5)

Eph 3:3 how that by revelation was made known unto me the mystery, as I wrote before in few words, Eph 3:4 whereby, when ye read, ye can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ; Eph 3:5 which in other generations was not made known unto the sons of men, as it hath now been revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;

12. They wrote it down and are the commands of God (1 Cor 14:37; 2 Pet 3:2)

1Co 14:37 If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him take knowledge of the things which I write unto you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.

2Pe 3:1 This is now, beloved, the second epistle that I write unto you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by putting you in remembrance; 2Pe 3:2 that ye should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandments of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles:

13. Any who do not obey these commands are to be disfellowshipped, in order that he may repent and be reclaimed (2 Thess 3:14)

2Th 3:14 And if any man obeyeth not our word by this epistle, note that man, that ye have no company with him, to the end that he may be ashamed.

14. That which we read are the very words of God (1 Thess 2:13)

1Th 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

15. God’s word is His commandments, and His commandments are His word, they are used synonymously in (1 John 2:3-5)

1Jo 2:3 And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 1Jo 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 1Jo 2:5 but whoso keepeth his word, in him verily hath the love of God been perfected. Hereby we know that we are in him:

16. God’s word is the only standard by which we all can believe the same, not the creeds of men, not what you or I think, but rather what God says (John 17:20-21)

Joh 17:20 Neither for these only do I pray, but for them also that believe on me through their word; Joh 17:21 that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us: that the world may believe that thou didst send me.

17. The sum of God’s word is truth, not just a passage or two taken out of context, if we don’t gather up everything the bible states concerning a certain topic, we may be led to a false conclusion (Ps 119:160).

Psa 119:160 The sum of thy word is truth; And every one of thy righteous ordinances for ever.

18. God’s word contains everything that one needs to be complete in the sight of God (2 Tim 3:16-17; 2 Pet 1:3)

2Ti 3:16 Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. 2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.

2Pe 1:3 seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him (that knowledge is only found in the bible) that called us by his own glory and virtue;

19. Those who love Christ will keep his commandments (John 14:15; 2 John 6)

Joh 14:15 If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.

2Jo 1:6 And this is love, that we should walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, even as ye heard from the beginning, that ye should walk in it.

20. All of them (Heb 5:9; Mt 28:20a; Acts 3: 22-23, 2 Thess 1:8-9)

Heb 5:9 and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;

Mat 28:20a teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you;

2Th 1:8 rendering vengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus: 2Th 1:9 who shall suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

Therefore obey the Gospel from the heart unto eternal life (Rom 6:17-18)

Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
