“SHALL TWO WALK TOGETHER EXCEPT THEY HAVE AGREED?”

Thesis: To impress upon the hearers that God has made all of the critical decisions for His people in matters of fellowship, we simply have to hear, believe and obey, from the heart.

Text: Amos 3:1-3
Amo 3:1 Hear this word that Jehovah hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying, Amo 3:2 You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will visit upon you all your iniquities. Amo 3:3 Shall two walk together, except they have agreed?

Introduction,
1. Amos was a prophet of Jehovah that prophesied in the Northern kingdom in about the year 755 B.C., his name means “Burden Bearer,” and that he was, in the first 2 chapters alone, Jehovah through him, prophesied against 8 nations for the evils which they have committed, and the resulting judgments that would take place, ending with Judah and Israel.

2. It was a time of great prosperity in the Northern Kingdom, and as one might expect, when physical wealth abounds, oftentimes moral and religious corruption are also heightened, it seems that riches tend to lead man away from God while looking more towards self as the answer for most problems instead of the Most High.

3. This can be clearly seen in our nation today, physical wealth abounds, yet moral and religious righteousness is at an all time low in this so called “one nation under God.”

4. When we enter the text here in Amos 3:1, the Northern Kingdom (Israel) is still under consideration, but the statements that are now being made are widened to include the Southern Kingdom (Judah) also, that is seen by the phrase “the whole family which I brought out of the land of Egypt.”

5. In verse 2 it states that God “only” has “known” them (all of the children of Israel), with the fact of God’s omniscience (all knowingness) in view, we must consider this to be in the sense of “relationship,” as that of a Father to His children, therefore with their sins in view, He as their Father will chasten them, as any father could and should who truly loves his children (Pro 13:24).

Pro 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son; But he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

6. In verse 3 we read the statement, “Shall two walk together except they have agreed?” Now this is an axiomatic statement, a general truth, likened unto a proverb and many commentators consider this to be Jehovah stating to the Children of Israel “seeing that they walk no longer in His Law, therefore they cannot and do not walk together, they are not agreed.”

7. While others (Kiel; Hailey) consider this statement to be speaking of the Jehovah and the prophet walking together, because Amos by proclaiming God’s will was carrying out his divine appointment.

8. But for this lesson we will consider this statement in its general sense, and apply it thusly . . .
1) “Shall two walk together except they have agreed?” when the two are Christians and unbelievers.
2) “Shall two walk together except they have agreed?” when the two are faithful and erring Christians.
3) “Shall two walk together except they have agreed?” when the two are God and all classes of people.

I. SHALL TWO WALK TOGETHER EXCEPT THEY HAVE AGREED?(CHRISTIANS AND UNBELIEVERS) turn to 2 Cor 6:14-18.

2Co 6:14 Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers: for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? or what communion hath light with darkness? 2Co 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what portion hath a believer with an unbeliever? 2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath a temple of God with idols? for we are a temple of the living God; even as God said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2Co 6:17 Wherefore Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, And touch no unclean thing; And I will receive you, 2Co 6:18 And will be to you a Father, And ye shall be to me sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

A. (v 14a)

2Co 6:14a Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers:

This first statement “be not” is in the imperative mood, in other words, “it is imperative that one follow this injunction

1. “Unequally yoked” here is an allusion to Lev 19:19 and Deut 22:9-11, where the basic command was to not mingle diverse kinds together, specifically Deut 22:10 . . .

Deu 22:10 Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together.

a. “Unequally” would refer to any given situation where the Christian may be pressured by a partner, whether it be a business partner, a close friend, or a spouse, to walk not in the light of God’s commands.

b. Some would say that this forbids marrying a non-Christian, while others would state that this is not the case, that this is not an absolute prohibition concerning the marriage between a Christian and an unbeliever, and both would site 1 Cor 7:12-15 as proof text.

c. Remember that we all have to stand before God and give account of ourselves before Him (Rom 14:12), therefore this is a situation that should be studied very carefully before any lasting moves are made.

d. But I will state this, whether it be a prospective business partner, friend, or spouse, common sense only dictates that these association ought to be with Christians, for the others are children of Satan, for cause of sin, and there is no middle ground, (Mt 12:30) . . .

Mat 12:30 He that is not with me is against me, and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

e. And it could just be a matter of time before one will be desiring the same things as their associates do, (1 John 2:16),

1Jo 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vain glory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1Jo 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

d. And thereby making yourself an enemy of God (Ja 4:4).

Jam 4:4 Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God.

e. And in the case of marriage, it is likely that before long you may be following the will of your father in-law (Satan) instead of your heavenly Father.

f. What is more natural than to love the things your spouse loves, of course it could go the other way, but most instances that I am aware of, this is generally not the case.

B. (v 14b -16a)

2Co 6:14b for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? or what communion hath light with darkness? 2Co 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what portion hath a believer with an unbeliever? 2Co 6:16a And what agreement hath a temple of God with idols?

The Christian and the unbeliever just do not want the same things, they do not have the same goals, and they certainly do not have the same end, as our Lord stated in (Mt 25:46).

Mat 25:46 And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.

1. We are in the world, and we must be, we cannot be isolationists, as 1 Cor 5:10 clearly implies, we must shine as lights in this sin darkened world, showing forth our good works, so that our heavenly Father may be glorified (Mt 5:14-16).

Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house. Mat 5:16 Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

a. Often times we may be shining as stop lights, attempting to do our best to obey the laws of the land, traffic laws (such as obeying the speed limit, coming to complete stops, ect), tax laws (as in two party sales, ect), and so on, often seeming to hinder others by our diligence to adhere to said laws.

b. Most importantly we are to be seen as lights in the world holding forth the Word of life (Phili 2:15-16), in order that some may hear, believe and obey unto the life eternal.

Phi 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and questionings: Phi 2:15 that ye may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye are seen as lights in the world, Phi 2:16 holding forth the word of life; that I may have whereof to glory in the day of Christ, that I did not run in vain neither labor in vain.

c. In doing these things we are the salt of the earth, we bring individuals to God through the gospel, thereby postponing the destruction of this material universe (2 Pet 3:9-10; Mt 5:13).

Mat 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.

C. (v 16b)

2Co 6:16b for we are a temple of the living God; even as God said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

This is a combination of Ex 29:45 and Lev 26:12 being quoted here, the principle is the same in the OT as in the NT, God figuratively walks and thereby dwells in His people, when? When they do His will (John 14:23; 2 John 9).

Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

2Jo 1:9 Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son.

1. And on the flipside, those that do not abide in the doctrine of Christ are not privileged to this fellowship, only those that walk in the light of God’s Word (Ps 119:105) have fellowship with Him (1 John 1:7).

1Jo 1:7 but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

a. We would have to put the entire denominational world in this class of unbelievers, they do not believe as truth, what God plainly states in His Word in many essential matters, most importantly “the plan of salvation.”

b. When we believe (which naturally would include hearing, repenting and confessing Jesus as Christ) and are baptized, we are saved (Mk 16:16), we are then born of the water and the Spirit (John 3:5), through the washing of regeneration and renewing of (by) the Holy Spirit (Tit 3:5), we at this point are made sons of God (Gal 3:26-27) and Abrahams seed, heirs according to the promise (Gal 3:28), we are then transferred into the kingdom, the church, the house of God, we are part of that family (Mk 10:20), the house of God (1 Tim 3:15).

c. Those in denominations deny these basic truths, they are likened to the Jews of Paul’s day, who cannot be saved by their own methods (Rom 10:1-3) . . .

Rom 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and my supplication to God is for them, that they may be saved. Rom 10:2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. Rom 10:3 For being ignorant (self imposed ignorance)of God's righteousness (the gospel; Rom 1:17), and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

d. My heart’s desire is that the sectarians today be saved also, so let us pray and preach, as God gives the increase, that it may come about, for (Mt 7:21) . . .

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.

D. (v 17)

2Co 6:17 Wherefore Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, And touch no unclean thing; And I will receive you,

Again this does not speak of physically coming out of the world, but rather this refers to coming out of the “ways” of the world (2 John 2:16) . . .

1Jo 2:16 the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vain glory of life,

1. This would include sins of omission, commission, and against one conscience, knowing and walking in the light of God’s divine guidance from the heart, to the very bests of one’s ability.

a. This would likewise include the contextual command not to so closely associate with those who were possibly formerly our friends, as to be partakers of their world following ways (1 Pet 1:14).

1Pe 1:14 as children of obedience, not fashioning yourselves according to your former lusts in the time of your ignorance:

b. And this is likely to bring reproach upon us from them (1 Pet 4:2-4).

1Pe 4:2 that ye no longer should live the rest of your time in flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 1Pe 4:3 For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries: 1Pe 4:4 wherein they think strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

c. But that is a basic truth that all faithful Christians have to learn to accept (2 Tim 3:12).

2Ti 3:12 Yea, and all that would live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

d. Why? Because of the Cain and Able syndrome (1 John 3:12b; John 15:19)

1Jo 3:12b And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

Joh 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

E. (v 18)

2Co 6:18 And will be to you a Father, And ye shall be to me sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

But here is the reward, fellowship with our new eternal family, freedom from sin, freedom from the fear of death, and the hope of eternal life with God, Who, cannot lie, and promised before the world began (Tit 1:2).

1. But this will only take place, if we are agreed, we cannot concoct our own doctrine, which only results in vain worship (Mt 15:9) and no salvation, for it is God that justifies (Rom 8:33), but walking together, with God, in the apostles doctrine (Acts 2:42), the doctrine of Christ (2 John 9), then God will walk with us, and be our God, and we will be His people.

II. SHALL TWO WALK TOGETHER EXCEPT THEY HAVE AGREED? (FAITHFUL AND ERRING CHRISTIANS) turn to 1 Cor 5:9-13

1Co 5:9 I wrote unto you in my epistle to have no company with fornicators; 1Co 5:10 not at all meaning with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world: 1Co 5:11 but as it is, I wrote unto you not to keep company, if any man that is named a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one no, not to eat. 1Co 5:12 For what have I to do with judging them that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within? 1Co 5:13 But them that are without God judgeth. Put away the wicked man from among yourselves.

A. (v 9-10)

1Co 5:9 I wrote unto you in my epistle to have no company with fornicators; 1Co 5:10 not at all meaning with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world:

Verse 9 teaches us that Paul wrote a prior letter concerning the situation of fornicating brethren, but this implies that they misunderstood his meaning,

1. He did not mean all fornicators, just those that were Christians, for to have no company with any fornicators would mean that one would have to be an isolationist, they couldn’t remain in society in order to shine as lights in the world spreading the Gospel of Christ.

a. Let us note that in this verse the sins are widened beyond just that of fornicators, the covetous, extortioners and idolaters are added to the list.

B. (v 11)

1Co 5:11 but as it is, I wrote unto you not to keep company, if any man that is named a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one no, not to eat.

Note that in this verse the sins are widened even more, revilers and drunkards are added to this list, no Christians that are active in such sins are to be kept company, they are not to be shared with the common meal.

1. Look at this list and think about what is seen in the church today, the unlawful marriages, the social drinking, those that spend most of their lives in order to gain possessions at the cost of their own families and God, those that are constantly speaking evil of others, are we to fellowship them and not apply church discipline as commanded? (Rom 3:4a).

Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar;

C. (v 12)

1Co 5:12 For what have I to do with judging them that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within?

But as far as the unbelievers are concerned in these matters, we surely are to reprove sin and uphold righteousness as the situation dictates concerning non-Christians, but we are not to exercise discipline towards them as with the Christian.

1. There is a growing and large movement to withhold discipline for the sake of love, this certainly is not talking about the Biblical definition of love (John 14:15; 1 John 2:5; 2 John 6).

Joh 14:15 If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.

1Jo 2:5 but whoso keepeth his word, in him verily hath the love of God been perfected. Hereby we know that we are in him:

2Jo 1:6 And this is love, that we should walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, even as ye heard from the beginning, that ye should walk in it.

a. We cannot bind where God has not bound, nor loosen where God has not loosened (1 Cor 4:6), this is an area that many congregations are not obeying the Lord, Who rules over all things to His church (Eph 1:22), therefore let us strive to be the Lord’s church, and not merely another concoction of men.

D. (v 13)

1Co 5:13 But them that are without God judgeth. Put away the wicked man from among yourselves.

God will judge those that are outside of the body of Christ (Acts 17:31).

Act 17:31 inasmuch as he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

1. But we must discern (judge) if individuals are dogs or swine (Mt 7:6), and we must always sum up individuals according to God’s revealed standards (John 7:24; Ps 119:172), but we are not to exercise disciplinary measures against them.

2. But those that are of the body of Christ, in the case of the sins mentioned here we are to put them away from the congregation, in order that they may come to repentance, and not infect the rest of the body with their sinful ways, but our motives are always to be undergirded by love, the love of God, and of those in the clutches of sin.

3. Also keep these passages in mind concerning this matter of discipline (2 Thess 3:6, 14-15)

2Th 3:6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which they received of us . . .

2Th 3:14 And if any man obeyeth not our word by this epistle, note that man, that ye have no company with him, to the end that he may be ashamed. 2Th 3:15 And yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

a. We need always keep in mind, that we are to love all, the brethren and those of the world, the enemies of God, yet we are to hate their sin (as did Christ; Heb 1:9), discipline is used to restore, not destroy.

F. Now consider the matter of a sin between brethren (Mt 18:15-18)

Mat 18:15 And if thy brother sin against thee, go, show him his fault between thee and him alone: if he hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. Mat 18:16 But if he hear thee not, take with thee one or two more, that at the mouth of two witnesses or three every word may be established. Mat 18:17 And if he refuse to hear them, tell it unto the church: and if he refuse to hear the church also, let him be unto thee as the Gentile and the publican. Mat 18:18 Verily I say unto you, what things soever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and what things soever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

1. This is systematic and simple, but the end result is basically the same, he is to be treated as an unbeliever.

a. Let us keep in mind that the unbeliever is to be taught, to be shown the light of the Gospel, we have non-Christians in our assemblies (1 Cor 14:23-25), this is not being unequally yoked with them.

b. But the erring brethren in sin, as the unbeliever, is separated from God until God’s terms for forgiveness are met (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9), therefore this person cannot take a leading role within the congregational setting, as is seen many in many assemblies today.

G. Now let us take a brief look at false teachers (Acts 18:24-28).

Act 18:24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by race, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus; and he was mighty in the scriptures. Act 18:25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spake and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, knowing only the baptism of John: Act 18:26 and he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more accurately. Act 18:27 And when he was minded to pass over into Achaia, the brethren encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him: and when he was come, he helped them much that had believed through grace; Act 18:28 for he powerfully confuted the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

1. If Apollos would not have accepted the truth, certain necessary measures would have had to been taken.

a. He would have to be marked as a spreader of another Gospel (Gal 1:6-9), and be turned from (Rom 16:17).

Rom 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them that are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which ye learned: and turn away from them.

b. For he is the heretic or factious man as seen in Tit 3:10-11.

Tit 3:10 A factious man after a first and second admonition refuse; Tit 3:11 knowing that such a one is perverted, and sinneth, being self-condemned.

c. He would have to be refused any assistance that would enable him to promote his false Gospel (2 John 10-11).

2Jo 1:10 If any one cometh unto you, and bringeth not this teaching, receive him not into your house, and give him no greeting: 2Jo 1:11 for he that giveth him greeting partaketh in his evil works.

d. And lastly and most importantly, he is to be prayed for (Ja 5:16b),

Jam 5:16b . . . The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in its working.

e. And taught whenever possible, without doing damage to babes in Christ.

f. So after looking at these groups of erring brethren, we cannot treat them as nothing is wrong, we are commanded in each circumstance how they are to be treated, but it, as always, is in the hope of bringing them to repentance, therefore we cannot walk together for “we are not agreed,” we cannot fellowship those who God does not fellowship (1 John 1:7).

III. SHALL TWO WALK TOGETHER EXCEPT THEY HAVE AGREED? (GOD AND ALL CLASSES OF PEOPLE) (turn to Isa 59:1-2).

A. (Isa 59:1-2)

Isa 59:1 Behold, Jehovah's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: Isa 59:2 but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, so that he will not hear.

This passage is talking about the physical nation of Israel, who was in a covenantal relationship with the Most High, but this general principle applies to all classes of people, sin separates one from a holy God Who cannot fellowship sin, the only difference between the two (alien sinners and erring children of God) is the conditions that have to be met for forgiveness are differing.

1. Yet we need to extend this part of our lesson to one more class, for there are 3 classes . . .

1) The safe

2) The saved

3) And the lost.

a. The “safe” would be the unaccountable, whether they be that way from a mental deficiency, or the young, whose minds are not yet developed enough to recognize the seriousness of sin, nor could effectively walk in the light of the Gospel.

b. The child does not inherit sin from anyone, neither their own fathers, or from Adam the father (ancestor) of all men (Ezek 18:20).

Eze 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

c. The young are not capable of properly discerning the severity of their actions (Deut 1:39; Num 14:29, 31)

Deu 1:39 Moreover your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, and your children, that this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

Num 14:29 your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, that have murmured against me,

Num 14:31 But your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected.

d. It is a proven fact that the brain continues to grow until a person is 21 years of age, therefore it is not fully developed before that point.

e. Does that mean that everyone that dies 19 and under is safe?

f. I don’t know for sure, but I do know that God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34; Rom 2:11; Eph 6:9; 1 Pet 1:17), and also, that He does not change (Mal 3:6; Ja 1:17).

g. And I certainly would not stop anybody from obeying the Gospel, yet our all merciful and all gracious, and all loving, and all powerful God, is making much good out of the many evils in this world (Gen 50:20).

h. Consider the catastrophes of recent history, thousands dead, a real tragedies, and that is true, yet, many of these who were children may have grown up in idolatry, or unbelief, but are now in paradise awaiting that great Day, these are the marvelous ways of God (Isa 55:8-9).

i. Therefore the “safe” by default, agree and are walking with God.

2. The “saved” are those that have obeyed the Gospel of Christ, “as it is written,” by hearing (or reading), believing, repenting of their sins, confessing Jesus as the Christ, and were baptized (immersed) for the remission of their sins.

a. When one from this class errs (sins), they must come to their Father in repentance and confession to Him, of said sins (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9).

b. This is the “only” prayer that God will hear from them (1 Pet 3:12), and “only” they are privileged as sons of God (Gal 3:26-28), priests of God (1 Pet 2:5, 9), who are able to go through their Intercessor (Heb 7:22; Rom 8:34) their High Priest (Heb 3:1), their one Mediator (1 Tim 2:5), and their only way to the Father (John 14:6), Christ Jesus the Lord, this avenue is not available to the lost (John 9:31; Pro 15:8; 29; 28:9), God has no illegitimate children, He is no adulterer, all are born from above the same way (John 3:5; Mk 16:16).

c. But when one of this class complies with the perfect law of liberty (Ja 1:25), which was made for an imperfect man, God and he agree, and they walk together, by the grace and mercy of He Who created and sustaineth all.

3. The last class we will look at is the “lost,” all accountable have sinned as to separate them selves from God (Rom 3:23),

Rom 3:23 for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

a. All from this class, and the saved class also, deserve the wages of sin (Rom 6:23), but the grace of God appeared, Jesus Christ and His gospel (Tit 2:11-12).

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

b. (John 3:16)

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.

c. (Gal 4:4)

Gal 4:4 but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, Gal 4:5 that he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

d. (Rom 1:16)

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

e. It has the power to take away sins from them that were formerly under nothing more than a temporary appeasement [setting aside](Acts 13:38-39; Heb 10:4; Rom 3:25; Heb 9:15).

f. It has the power to change one who once followed after the lusts of the flesh, to one who thirsts for the living God, and all His ways through the renewal (Rom 12:1-2; Eph 4:23; Col 3:10; Tit 3:5).

g. And it was preached by the apostles and 1st century prophets by the power of the Holy Spirit, sent down from heaven (1 Pet 1:12).

h. And it’s the same message we preach today, and when obeyed from the heart, the result is the resurrection to the life eternal, spending that one eternal Day with Jehovah our God.

i. Not only will we walk together by agreement, but “God Himself will be with them, and be their God” in eternity if they remain faithful (Rev 21:3b).

j. What’s the message . . .

One must . . .

Hear the Word of God (Acts 2:37; Rom 10:17)

Rom 10:17 . . . faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

It must be implanted deeply within the good ground, the good heart

One must . . .

Believe that Jesus is the Christ (Acts 8:37; John 20:31); this is the major purpose of the Gospel accounts . . .

Joh 20:31 . . . these are written, that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye may have life in his name.

One must . . .

Repent of sins, (Acts 17:30; Luke 13:3, 5) Paul stated on mars hill . . .

Act 17:30 The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent:

One must . . .

Confess Jesus as the Christ before men (Acts 8:37; Rom 10:9), the eunuch said . . .

“I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” So must you

One must . . .

Be baptized (immersed), which doth now save us (1 Pet 3:21), immersed into Christ (Gal 3:27) into the death of Christ (Rom 6:3) where His precious blood was shed (John 19:34) unto (for) the remission of sins. (Acts 2:38; 22:16); at which point God adds you to the church (Acts 2:47) translates you into the kingdom (Col 1:13) adds you to that one body (1 Cor 12:13), the only one God promised to save (Eph 5:23).

And finally one must live a holy life (1 Pet 1:15) according to the gospel, not perfect, but faithful (Rev 2:10), being renewed day by day, Putting off that old man, and putting on the new, being constantly in a state of spiritual growth, Walking together and thereby agreeing with Him unto eternal life.
